A calming corner kit includes fidget tools to help students emotionally self-regulate, which then allows students to concentrate on their academics. These tools will provide children with a safe space to process emotions in the classroom and give them the tools to work through strong emotions. Calming kits allow students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them to assist in emotional regulation.
By donating to this project, you will not only help to improve and increase student attention and focus in moments of emotional distress, but you will also ultimately help to increase their concentration and agility to emotional regulation, ultimately leading to academic achievement. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a break and a moment to recharge their minds. They almost always make good choices about their actions, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are emotionally regulated. Making sure students are emotionally regulated is an essential component in supporting academic success, and this can happen with the use of fidget tools in a calming corner kit.
In the calming corner kits, I would like to include a 2-minute sand timer for visualization, a liquid motion timer, sensory finger rings, zipper bracelets, pop tubes, marble fidgets, scented stickers and pinwheels. Some examples of how these items will assist include deep breathing, visual concentration, tactile manipulation, stress/anxiety relief, and acupressure. All of these tools will aim to meet various visual, olfactory, tactile and auditory feedback sensory needs of the students at my school.
