I am requesting guided reading fiction and nonfiction book sets to close the achievement gap! The COVID pandemic along with school closures has dramatically effected student achievement, especially in reading. Providing students with guided reading is an effective strategy that will help students strategically focus on the specific reading skills they need to show growth, success at their grade level, and close the achievement gap created by the pandemic.
Small group instruction is essential to help close the widening achievement gap that the pandemic has caused and providing students with the right learning environment will be key to their success!
My project will provide students with interactive resources such as timers, white boards, and answer buzzers to keep them engaged. My project's focal point will also be to provide students that are at the bottom of the 10th percentile with high interest book level sets to focus on literature circles and close reading.
In addition, the books I have selected will help the students in grade 4, specifically focusing on the Reading Literature standards- R.L.4.1, R.L.4.2, R.L 4.3, as well as the Reading Informational standards- R.I.4.1, R.I.4.2, and R.I.4.3, which focus on asking and answering questions in a text and being able to retell stories and identify main ideas. The texts I have chosen will allow students to apply grade level standards using texts that are leveled and appropriate for equitable access (texts that are at a primary level in order to give students an opportunity to apply grade level standards without frustration).
