I want all of my students to know that they are valued, loved, and equal. At a recent professional development, we were asked if our students saw themselves in a mirror or a window in our classroom. By seeing themsleves in a mirror, they are respresented. They see people that look like them in books, in class decorations, and in the toys they play with. A child looking through a window does not have this same experience. I reccently read a book about an African American girl's beautiful hair. The look on one of my student's face was precious as she intently listened and proudly related to the main character. This project will help me bring more books, toys, and decor into my classroom that values all races, cultures, and disabilities. This will help to build a stronger sense of community and make all children feel safe and welcome.
