CPA Winter Hats: a Real World Skill for Visual Arts

Funded Nov 7, 2022

Because of your support, the 8th grade students at Crossroads Preparatory Academy were able to spend the last week before winter break learning how to sew winter hats as a community of artists. With the fabric and sewing supplies provided, students were really engaged to make something in art that has a real-world application.

The students worked collaboratively on their winter hats, just before a snow storm leading into winter break -hopefully the hats came in handy! Students with natural sewing skills or prior experience were able to assist their peers with some of the steps, offering encouragement to continue through a new artistic skill and building closer friendships in academic and artistic community. They learned about the importance of supporting each other, problem-solving, and perseverance with craftsmanship and attention to detail so that their hat would come together at the end.

Some students were excited to have made their own winter hats, and some students had plans of making a hat for a family member. Teachers from the 8th grade team reported back that some of the students were wearing their hats through the rest of the school day, and one student had given theirs to a teacher who had made a difference in their life. It was fun to see the students proud of their new art ability.

I'm excited to say that with the funded sewing supplies, we will have extra to carry into for a project for the following semester. Thank you for providing this experience for our young scholars.”

With gratitude,

Ms. Sanderson
