  • Spark Curious Minds!

    Funded Nov 22, 2015

We just found out that our project 'Spark Curious Minds' was fully funded and that we are receiving our Scholastic News and Science Spin magazines and online resources!

When we announced it to the students today and showed them the virtual field trip, they actually cheered. They could not get enough of the animals and the geographical images. It was exciting to listen to the questions and conversations that were generated.

Thank you for your generous donations that will help us bring literacy, science and social studies to life for our children!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Brown

  • Future Einsteins In The Making!

    Funded Jun 19, 2013

Your donation to our science lab has allowed our first graders to experience the scientific method like never before. We have used our science tools to create kites, build robots, catch insects and more! Each month, since receiving our materials, we have been able to explore the world of science using the nonfiction texts and scientist tools that you provided.

The day the kits and books arrived was like Christmas! We all sat together and opened them and just "played around" with the materials. The children were full of oooohs and aaahs with each box opened. They said that we were "real scientists" and that "science is their favorite subject.

With the use of the science kits and books that we have explored, our students have a sparked interest into the world of science and are much more eager readers! Their comprehension of our science standards has increased as a result of the hands-on experiments we have done together. They are also more interested in reading more challenging nonfiction texts to learn more about the world around us.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Brown

  • Inspiring Authors Inspire Readers

    Funded Jul 10, 2011

We have recently started our author study activities using the book sets that you have provided. So far, the children are enjoying the Leo Lionni books the most and have completed some amazing reader's response, writing and art projects to compliment the stories we have read. Each time we complete a story or activity, the students are full of smiles and are eager to read and write more.

With the budget cuts in education and the low socio-economic status of our school, good literature is a luxury that a lot of classrooms and families are missing. Thanks to you and your generosity, my students are truly experiencing "the greats". These books have inspired them as readers. It brings joy to my heart each time they sit and read or return from the library with a book by one of our shared authors.

Thank you for the impact you have made!

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Brown

  • Weaving A Web Of Adventure

    Funded Mar 4, 2011

Thank you for the generous donation of Charlotte's Web books for our class. The children have thoroughly enjoyed having their own copies to refer to during our adventures with Fern, Wilbur and Charlotte. With each chapter we have read, it has been a pleasure to watch their eyes widen with surprise; their smiles grow with laughter and their chins tremble as the characters experienced sadness.

Your donation has brought Zuckerman's farm to life for each child in our class. We have created barn scenes, character poems and farm narratives to accompany our Charlotte's Web unit. Our end of the year celebration will have a Charlotte's Web theme, including Wilbur cupcakes, spider piniatas and a viewing of the movie, of course!

We greatly appreciate your kindness and spirit of giving. It means the world to us as teachers and as lovers of literature to have others value the education of our students as we pass the torch of learning to another generation!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Brown

Our class is a first grade inclusion class in a Title 1 school. Most of the students are being raised in low social economic homes where books and other reading resources are a luxury most cannot afford. As first graders, they have a strong desire to grow as readers and explore the world through reading, yet most lack the support and resources needed to develop a strong reading vocabulary and build fluency as readers.
