The books that I have chosen will help students engage in interpreting information presented visually and quantitatively (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.4.7). These are books that I am planning to give to students to take home so that they can have access to a fun, interesting, and educational text at home. This is especially important as many students come from low SES backgrounds and may not have access to many of their own books at home. Using manipulatives such as building blocks can help students with several mathematical practices, including MP.2, reasoning abstractly and quantitatively, MP.4, modeling with mathematics, and MP.5, using appropriate tools strategically. They can use these blocks as a tool to help them visually represent problems presented to them and solve by analyzing the relationships between the numbers. With these new and engaging manipulatives and literature, my students will be able to grow and expand upon their current STEM knowledge and learn to demonstrate their ideas using visual representations as well as appropriate vocabulary.
