Many of my sensational students struggle to keep their bodies seated. I give them lots of opportunities to have movement breaks to get rid of the wiggles. However, there are few seating choices. There are a couple of bar-height stools I found at a yard sale and one hand-me-down wiggle cushion. In spite of being old and needing to be re-inflated weekly, my students call dibs on the wiggle cushion at the end of each day and treasure the days when they score. Those who do not get the sole wiggle seat often choose to sit or sprawl on the floor. This makes it hard for them to view the whiteboard or work with their peers (although it does provide great spacing during COVID!) Having previously worked with students with special needs, I know how alternative seating can support my students' movement and sensory needs while keeping their focus on learning. We had the opportunity to "test drive" a wiggle seat from special services, and the students LOVED it, in spite of it being too low to reach their desks! Please help us get off the floor and into alternative seating before the snow flies and the floor becomes wet, salty, and muddy!
