This laptop will help create new, varied opportunities, both for students who are in-class, and students who are online and Zooming in during this COVID season.
Having a dedicated laptop as a workstation will provide new opportunities for the students to work in stations, allow me to have one computer to present with and one to function as the camera, and allow a designated station for students to work on research projects of their own. As it stands, our department is sharing Chromebook carts, leaving few options if another teacher needs the computers for the day. An additional laptop will allow me to use at least one computer for researching, typing, speech-to-text, and many other opportunities for the students to be able to more easily succeed. Especially if they have been out for COVID-related reasons.
In addition, my current laptop is the one I use to present. If I had a second laptop available to me, I would be able to use one for presenting (as the HDMI cable is on the opposite end of the room from my presentation space) and one for the direct camera, chat, and access to the participants. It would allow for greater mobility in the classroom and easier access for the students who may join in online when they are stuck at home.
I will be in charge of the yearbook and will need a stronger computer than the school-issued Chromebooks for image manipulation and preparation. This will allow me to offer students who do not have their own computers a workstation to build upon and work with.
Finally, but certainly not the last of reasons, it would allow me to create better workspace environments, where students can break into groups and use a more public computer to interact with the material offered.
