Aside from learning letter names and sounds, kindergarteners' first steps in learning to read are through the use of high frequency words or as we call them sight words. These words are practiced on a daily basis in our classroom and I strive for my kindergartners to know one hundred of these words to prepare them for first grade. Therefore, creating fun, hands-on activities for them to practice these words, helps keep them not only focused, but engaged in their learning. Learning should be fun, especially for five year olds. When teaching the Nevada Academic Content Standards RFK 1-3, using hands-on materials. such as the sight word learning centers and touch and read CVC activities from Lakeshore, will provide my incredible students with new and exciting ways to practice their sight words and reading skills. Having new activities for them to explore increases their attention span on an activity and makes them eager to do their work. Paper-pencil work does not elicit the same reaction as having the same paper in a write and wipe pocket and using an expo marker to complete it. By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student attention and focus, you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement. You will also be helping to provide students with more materials that can be taken home. For example, the card stock paper will be used to make flash cards of high frequency words and CVC words for each individual student to have at home and at school. Learning is taking place at home more than ever now. Therefore, providing parents with the materials they need to help their children is crucial for our students' success.
