We use so many learning materials in Elementary General Music, and sometimes, those include worksheets and listening activities, which require the students to write, draw, and color their ideas. Since there aren't any desks in my classroom, students don't have anywhere to lean on to complete their work. Having these over-the-chair seat pockets would allow space for me to provide clipboards, so that they have a flat surface to work on, instead of on their laps or on the floor. I'm so lucky to have a classroom, whereas so many of my colleagues are still traveling on a cart. We just need some storage solutions so that we can spend more time doing more music activities, and less time trying to find surfaces to write on. Some writing activities include learning how to draw and identify different music notes, and then in later grades, composing their own melodies and rhythms. They make inferences as to what they're hearing, like my 5th graders did during Hispanic Heritage Month, where they wrote their thoughts down and analyzed different cultures' traditional music. My little ones are listening for musical cues, and coloring a picture according to what they hear (ie: "If you hear drums, color the shoes brown" etc). The possibilities are endless!
