This project will help students overcome COVID related social and emotional trauma they may have experienced. The pandemic caused disruptions in routines and social isolation for children, which can be associated with anxiety and depression and can have implications for mental health later in life. Also, research has shown that as economic conditions worsen, children's mental health is negatively impacted. Minority children disproportionately have lost a parent, and low-income communities and communities of color overall experienced higher COVID-19 case rates and deaths. Losing a parent can have long term impacts on a child’s health, increasing their risk of substance abuse, mental health challenges, poor educational outcomes, and early death. Further, the death of a loved one from COVID-19 may have occurred amid increased social isolation and economic hardship due to the pandemic.
When students learn to appreciate and create art — whether it’s painting, dancing, rapping, or acting — they develop skills such as empathy, self-awareness, and self-management, which in turn fosters mental wellness.
The materials we purchase will be used in an afterschool program to write poetry, create art and allow for theatre productions. Specifically we will use the paper, crayons and watercolors to create posters and backdrops for our plays. The costumes, Reader Theater Script Boxes and microphones will be used for acting. The Writing Activity Station will allow for creative writing in poetry and scripts. The state standards covered are TH:Cr3.3.1 (Creating: Conceiving and developing new artistic ideas and work.
