In the classroom, we will be reading the novel And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. This mystery novel will be used to guide students in using reading comprehension strategies as they make inferences to solve the mystery collaboratively. At the end of this unit, students will work with their peers in groups to produce a board game poster project that highlights the plot and development of this story. Students will engage in classroom discussions and answer questions that ask students to make connections and make inferences by using a classroom set of dry erase boards and markers (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.1). The notebooks, pens, and pencils will be used each day at the beginning of class, where students will write a response to a journal prompt that will activate higher thinking and synthesis based on the plot, characters, and setting of the story (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.9-10.9). Copy paper will be used to print reading study note worksheets that students will use to follow the story as we read aloud in class. These worksheets will allow students to analyze the who, what, where, when, and how aspects of the mystery story. We will set the mood in class using the dimming lamps to emphasize the understanding of mood, suspense, and foreshadowing that plays a major role in Christie's mystery novel. Lastly, in response to the ongoing pandemic, the supply of Kleenex, Clorox wipes, and snack packs will help ensure a supportive and safe learning environment for my students.
