I allow my students to make choices for where they learn and work in my classroom everyday. Some students feel a sense of confidence and safety picking the same spot everyday where others like to change up their routine. I am always telling my students to “pick a spot that works best for your body or “pick a spot where you can do your best work”. Giving my students choice of their seating options allows them to gain that sense of control that many young lives might not get that opportunity outside of school. Many of my students love working at a high table with cushion chairs, a couch with a lap desk or clipboard, a bungee chair with a clipboard, on the floor with a lap desk, on the floor curled up with a blanket and a clipboard or in a swivel chair. They’ve made the joke that I would let them work on the ceiling if that meant them working their best and they’re right! My students become more motivated and less distracting in our lessons when they are comfortable in the spot that works best for their bodies.
