The students in middle school today have grown up around technology. Most of them don't have favorite actors or actresses; they have favorite gamers, Youtubers, and Twitch streamers. With all of these influences, it makes sense that teachers should be finding ways to bring their lessons into the digital age in order to meet students on a platform with which they are familiar and comfortable. To me, there is no better way to do that than by gamification in the classroom. Gamification is a teaching method in which instructional strategies and assignments are reimagined as games in order to more deeply engage students. Since so many of them are passionate about video games, a program like Legends of Learning is ideal for them. Legends of Learning allows a teacher to choose their subject (science) and grade level (6th), and then browse arcade-style computer games and simulations that reinforce classroom content. The games align directly with the state standards, and students must listen to reviewed information and use their knowledge from their lessons to advance in the games and eventually win. The program is compatible with Google Classroom and shares student progress and accuracy with the teacher, making it an ideal resource in the event that we must return to online learning, or in the event that a student is sick or under quarantine and must work from home.
