Many young children struggle to find the words to express the way they're feeling. Either they do not have the vocabulary, are scared to talk about their feelings, or do not understand what they are feeling. Using creative tools, like play, can help young people express what they're feeling inside, even if they cannot say the words. By using these social emotional games, I can help groups learn to relate to one another as well as put words to their emotions. At the end of my 6 week groups students should have a better understanding of their emotions and the tools to self regulate, self calm, have more confidence and the words to express what they're feeling.
Sometimes making a child feel safe, secure and heard requires creativity on the part of the adult. Not all children will have the words so having a plethora of creative tools at your fingertips is a must. As people who work with the social/emotional well being of our students, we are more important now than ever. Giving the students more tools in their toolbelt is always a positive step in the right direction.
I run anywhere from 5-20 groups a week with individual interventions in between. These materials will help students from pre-K to 5th grade. Utilizing what I receive from DonorsChoose, I can run my groups/individual therapy with different approaches. One group is a kindergarten group. They do not understand their emotions and how to recognize when their body is overwhelmed. Using the games about emotional regulation can teach them what their body feels like, for example, hot, tense, clinched fists, and help them learn valuable calming techniques before it gets to a point they do something negative. These are valuable skills they can use for the rest of their lives.
