  • March On! It's Women's History Month

    Funded Feb 16, 2023

Thank you for your generosity in support of the SSCHS library squad book club. We are excited to read the book and would not have this opportunity if it was not for your thoughtfulness we would not be able to learn new things and achieve our goals and reach new heights.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Echols

  • What's Coming to Us!

    Funded Sep 20, 2022

I truly don't know how to begin to express my gratitude for the donations to our library. All of the students who participated in the Hispanic Heritage Month author visit gained new insight and in particular for BIPOC students who are not depicted in books in a way that they can relate with.

My students had the pleasure of meeting Francesca Padilla a Latinx author whose debut novel "What's Coming to Me" a novel full of joy and hope and about grief, anger and fighting for what you deserve in life. The students were excited to hear her speak about' the book. The students were moved by her storytelling because she touched their hearts. One student wrote in her journal a quote that really resonated with me is, "They say money isn't everything, but that's for people who have never worried about how they're going to sleep, or drive to work, or buy a piece of fruit." The author illustrates in her book the windows and mirror experience.

Another student wrote," I love how the author characters are true to life and we can see our lived experiences in all of the characters especially the protagonist Minerva.”

  • A Healthy Mind is a Wealthy Soul

    Funded Aug 9, 2022

Thank you for donating to our A Healthy Mind is a wealthy soul project.

With the recent uptick in the number of COVID-19 cases here in New York City, my students are happy to know that we have supplies that will allow them to feel safe and secure. For many teens, it can cause stress and anxiety—even easygoing teens may experience butterflies, and those with some anxiety may get more nervous. The stickers, note pads, stress balls, colorful masks, snacks, and hand sanitizers proved to be a hit with the teens.

These items have positively affected my student's attitudes and demeanor, and they have grown even more!

These items brought joy to my student's faces, and they were excited to carry cheerful affirmation stickers with them daily.

I don't know how to express my gratitude for the donations to our library. Many people feel teenagers prefer to avoid stickers and stress balls, and my students have proven this notion incorrect. This donation will continue to help our library continue to be the classroom extension hub for learning.”

Once again, we are grateful for your support and happy for the snacks to use during our lunchtime and afterschool programs. Your donations will go a long way.”

  • Clean It Brand It!

    Funded May 10, 2022

Thank you for your generosity. The Clean it, Brand it! project was a massive success with our library. Our teens were a little upset that we had to replace the tee shirts with aprons to wear during their shifts; however, we made it work. The students felt confident and comfortable as they learned valuable skills and gained community service hour credits.

Another highlight was how happy the students were to keep the library germ-free, and having ownership over the space proved to be very gratifying for my students. One student stated, " I didn't realize how important it was to keep the computer lab cleaned in-between classes and how this prevented the spread of COVID-19. I am glad that we can keep the computer lab clean".

Overall, all students benefited from this project and were very happy with the outcome. The students realize it takes a village to maintain a safe and clean space for everyone.

Thanks again for your generosity and support of the SSCHS- MAJ Research and Media Center. We appreciate you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Echols

  • Preparing the Future - Personalized Career Portfolios

    Funded Apr 7, 2022

Thank you for donating to our Preparing the Future - Personalized Career Portfolios project.

The students were excited to complete their college and career readiness course and add all the beautiful documents to their portfolios. The students were able to complete a cover letter and thank you letter and use, as one student stated," "fancy paper for me resume". The students were excited about the linen resume paper and asked why the paper made a difference when creating a resume.

These items brought so many questions and created thought-provoking discussions among the students.

I genuinely don't know how to express my gratitude for the donations to our library. I understand that the items from the project students will carry from high school and beyond.”

    Funded May 9, 2022

Thank you for donating to our A Healthy Mind is a wealthy soul project.

The students were excited to know that the notepads, stickers, positivity bracelets, and the choice of various stress balls would help them during SAT and Regents exams. These items have positively affected my student's attitudes and demeanor, and they have grown even more!

These items brought joy to my student's faces, and they were excited to carry around cheerful affirmation stickers with them every day.

  • Snack Time Is Fun Time

    Funded Apr 7, 2022

We continued the momentum by providing healthy snacks, and the students were grateful. The healthy snacks provided the nourishment they needed to remain actively engaged during the long hours of playing Monopoly and the Game of Life after school. My students enjoyed Miss Vickie's potato chips so much that Student G – stated that she encouraged other students to attend board game afternoons to experience the best potato chips she had ever tasted.

Once again, we thank you for your generous support by providing the nourishing snacks for our afterschool program.”

We know from personal experience that books are powerful. Who hasn’t become fully immersed in a novel, empathizing with the characters and gaining new insight into our own lives in the process? As librarians or teachers, we can harness the power of books to help students deal with behavioral, emotional, and social issues in a practice known as bibliotherapy. At its most basic level, bibliotherapy involves selecting reading material relevant to the person’s life situation. In the past year and a half, teens have endured a lot of disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Help me introduce a new concept in the library by providing carefully selected reading materials to help and heal.
