Hand drums are an essential instrument for young students as they embark on their music learning journey. Not only are they easy to use, but they provide access to a wide variety of music learning activities that are fun to participate in. To play a hand drum, students hold the drum in one hand and strike it with the other. They are light weight with a large surface area, making it easy for any student to learn how to use, regardless of varying motor skills development. Young students can explore different ways to make sound with the drum while others make up movements that match the sounds they hear. This activity encourages exploration, active listening, and promotes the development of coordinated movement in little bodies. Older students can use the drums to practice critical music listening skills by ordering the drums from lowest to highest pitch. While all of the drums are the same size, many end up having variations in the tone they produce. This activity promotes teamwork, detail-oriented thinking, and demonstration of using musical listening ears as students progress. The opportunities are nearly endless when it comes to the hand drum in the elementary classroom. My students, with their active and creative mindsets, would benefit greatly from having these hand drums in the music classroom. By donating to this project, you will help foster a love not just for listening to music, but creating it as well.
