Last year, when students were confined to their homes due to Covid restrictions, few students at Wolff had access to art materials other than a pencil and paper. Therefore, now that students are attending school in person, I have a lot of ground to cover in providing students with a wide range of art mediums to explore in creating art. However, art supplies such as watercolor paint, watercolor paper, black permanent markers to outline with, and markers are expensive.
With DonorsChoose.org project funding, I will be able to give my students the much needed experience with other mediums beyond pencil and paper which my classroom budget cannot afford. The core art curriculum asks students to explore line and color, as well. There is no better way to experiment and mix colors than using water colors. Additionally, watercolors are far less expensive than acrylic or oil paint. Increasing the students' engagement is ideal. With the use of watercolors, the students get very focused and involved in their work.
One specific lesson I would like to try is to have students bring in 3 artifacts from home that represent their family culture. With these items, students will create a still life display to paint using watercolors. After the projects are completed, the students will share their use of color, their reason for choosing items involved, and the share the meaning of their work with the class.
