We all need a voice and the right to communicate. Students who are nonverbal or limited verbal have the right to communicate, socialize, make their needs/wants to be known, contribute to society, and functionally communicate in this world and make a difference. During COVID my students regressed significantly. My goal is to help them effectively communicate, contribute to society, engage in social exchanges, decrease behaviors, and use their communication devices with fidelity.
The toys I have purchased such as the treasure chest other Learning Resource items, and toys will address joint attention, wh-questions, speech sounds, core vocabulary (open, close, in out, next to, and again)requesting the items, increasing the MLU ( length of utterances), target speech sounds, social skills, preposition, sequencing/recall, answering yes/no questions, and vocabulary. These skills can be addressed by shaking the box or presenting the items by enticing students for desired items. The student(s) then have to attend and try to guess what is hidden, requesting which item they want, ask a peer/interact with , describe what is inside, placing the items in different positions and asking where the item is (on, in, next to..), producing the targeted speech sounds or core vocabulary that are outlined in the student(s) IEP, answering questions (wh and yes/no) about the items, and increasing their length of utterances by using descriptive words (I found/want/see + attribute + object). The students will require picture icons to ask, answer, communicate, and so forth using visual pictures that will need to be laminated for durability and attached Velco to create the sentences and ask/answer questions.
We all deserve the right to communicate
