My little engineers will be working through the entire engineering design process to solve an everyday problem. This project will take several weeks and students will need journals to document their work and progress. In addition, students will be collaborating with team members as well as other teams. Often students have great ideas but struggle to explain these ideas to others. Both the journals and whiteboard markers allow students to make their thinking visible through words, sketches, diagrams, and mathematical equations. Every student will have his/her own materials to encourage a safe, in-person learning environment. With the purchase of enough materials for each student to have his/her own, I can ensure a safe place to learn. The work the students will be doing encompasses the following Nevada Academic Content Standards: 3-5-ETS1-1-Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost 3-5-ETS1-2-Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem. 3-5ETS1-3-Plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved.
