  • Social Emotional Progress and Exploration

    Thank you very much for your donation of reading materials to our STAR Social Emotional Learning Program! The Joey Pigza Book Sets written by jack Gantos were quite appropriate for my student population as they are about a young boy with ADHD.

    The story plot included many funny examples of how growing up with ADHD can be difficult for students. The book sets follow the main character has he learns how he is different and how he learns to adapt and make better choices. My students were able to relate to the main character. This allowed the students to engage in meaningful social emotional learning activities in the classroom. They were able to laugh about their own life experiences compared to the main character in the books.

    The book sets allowed students in my classroom with opportunities to develop their ELA skills. Students practiced their reading fluency, comprehension skills and strengthened their writing abilities. You're support is greatly appreciated.”

    The yoga mats have become a daily part of our independent living and fitness lessons! The students are learning new skills for them to stay healthy.

    Thank you for the Base 10 blocks! The students have really progressed in their math lessons and the blocks assist the kids in generalizing their skills.

It is essential that Post Secondary students with disabilities have a center based program with an adult curriculum focused on gaining appropriate social communication, daily life, and vocational skills. The yoga mats would be beneficial to our program as they allow us to practice Yoga's incorporation of meditation and breathing. The benefits are excellent for the body, improving stamina and mobility and can help improve the students emotional well being. The students in our program love to read! We have greatly enjoyed reading in group formats. The books requested would allow us to have the materials in the classroom to continue reading as a group. Students with disabilities can struggle with phonological processing, reading fluency or speed, and reading comprehension. These sets of books would benefit our classroom. These resources will promote all NV Content Standards. Specifically, standards for Career Exploration are utilized. Specifically NV Content Standard Career Exploration 2.0. To demonstrate the Knowledge and Skills Necessary to Work Independently. (NS1). The students will be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to ensure a successful transition from high school to a career/job. [NS: 1.3] Additionally, these resources will assist us to compare the relationship between skills, interests, and personal abilities with current market trends and the changing workplace. Students will recognize employability skills such as initiative and teamwork. [NS: 2.2].
