My students were 2-3 years old when Covid-19 and pandemic hit; because of this, most of them are experiencing school and same-aged peer interaction for the first time. My pre-k kiddos can feel the stress of the pandemic through their parents, through having to do distance learning on and off throughout this school year, and the overall shared sense of anxiety felt throughout our community. With the requested materials, I will be able to modify my classroom to make it a more conducive environment for social emotional learning and much-needed sensory input so that my students can achieve their full potential! My students will first learn that they are safe through the requested self-regulation tools that will be used to create a calming environment. This safe space will be a place that they can go to cope with anxiety, stress, and everyday upsets that occur within the classroom. Next, my students will be able to appropriately climb and receive the needed sensory input with the pikler triangle. Allowing them to get this input will help them regulate their sensory needs and be able to focus on the curriculum. Lastly, all the sensory items will allow for my students to gain a connection to the world around them, which in turn helps them learn how to better communicate their wants and needs. My students will gain confidence and feel empowered through sensory exploration!
