Because my students have not had opportunities to discuss or collaborate in person as a result of virtual learning during the 2020-2021 school year, I would like to provide more opportunities for them to collaborate and discuss ideas in class. Table-top whiteboards allow them to share ideas, brainstorm, outline an argument, create visual representations of their learning, and participate in a hands-on discussion and collaboration experience. Adhesive whiteboards will allow me to make each table in my classroom a space where students are able to participate in a range of discussion and collaborations experiences (ELA SL.11-12.1). One of the collaborative projects my students will participate in this year is a literature circle project in which they choose a graphic memoir to read with a small group of their classmates. They participate in discussion of the text, work together to analyze authors' rhetorical techniques, and plan a close-reading of the text, ultimately sharing their analysis in a presentation to their classmates (ELA RI.11-12.6). I'd like to supplement my classroom library of graphic memoirs with sophisticated texts from a diverse group of authors from which students can choose. It's important for students to read engaging texts that they can identify with in order to drive their discussion, critical thinking, analysis, and reflection.
