As an educator, I work hard to create a classroom community that fosters a love of learning through exploration. A large part of this exploration in first grade is done through literacy and community building activities around the books we read. Each book that I have chosen has been done with care and with my students in mind, reflecting on the things that they are passionate, curious and eager to learn more about. Many of the books on this list will help students to find something at their specific reading level, which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time. Another handful of these books will be read aloud to students during carpet time, which will continue to support social emotional learning as a whole class. Most importantly, these books reflect the diverse classroom community we all call home. Representation is important and I want to reflect and honor the global majority in every aspect of my classroom. I want each of my students to see themselves within our reading. Multicultural literature has the ability to increase a sense of self-worth in students, achieve educational equity and a build a sense of empowerment. I have an amazing group of compassionate, inquisitive little learners and they all deserve to have access to more books that reflect their own lives and those around them. Thank you for helping my first graders fall more in love with reading!
