  • Make Phonics Lesson Possible

    Funded Nov 6, 2021

Having decodable readers in the school building was impactful. You donation to purchase the Hill Center's Decodable readers has reached far more reading groups than my 28 students. I am loaning out to other EC teachers and other teachers who see the need for decoable readers for their emergent readers.

This grant in particular allowed me to get more books and thus complete the set. Most of my students are not yet at book 5. However, other teachers are able to use them. I was delighted to be able to offer them.

    Thank you so very much!

    We are making a difference!”

    With gratitude,

  • Phonics Support Materials

    Funded Oct 27, 2021

The decodable readers (without pictures) allows students to read the text by sounding out the words. This is terrific brain exercise and really prepares them for the near future when pictures will become fewer and fewer in the text students are expected to read.

What the books also provide is a moment of confidence. Do not tell the Hill Center but I have been asked by two students to make a copy so that they can read it again to their teacher and their parent. In fact, one of those students asked "why were these stories so short?" Can you imagine ...a former non reader asking for a longer story!

They are so proud. That accounts for a lot when you have signs of dyslexia.

Also I have loaned books out to 3 other teachers which means your donation has helped triple the number of students I originally said.

In fact, I think I will order more so that I can continue to share as more and more elementary teachers are discovering the value of teaching students to decode the language.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. McClendon

Teaching to students with dyslexia requires repetition and practice to mastery. Finding items to read that match their phonics ability increases the practice in context and boosts their confidence because they realize that they can read! All they need is a different teaching method. For some intelligent minds, blending "b-a-t" takes great effort. At times, the b will flip to a d, and it is hard to stretch the sounds together so that it even sounds like a word in your mind. It is a magical moment when a kid is able to blend the isolated sounds into a word they recognize.
