Ecocolumns are mini, self-contained bio systems designed to help visualize natural ecosystems. They are comprised of terrestrial, decomposition, and aquatic chambers. In addition to supplies sow bugs, worms, snails, and fish are also used. The PURPOSE: Create a self contained, sustaining, ecosystem. Identify biotic & abiotic factors within each ecosystem. Identify producers, consumers, and decomposers within each ecosystem. Identify and describe food chains and food webs with each ecosystem. Describe how water, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen are cycled through the ecosystem. Collect and record both quantitative (pH, nitrogen, etc.) data and qualitative (condition of water, soil, plants, animals, etc.) data over a period of several weeks. Analyze data to determine if there is a correlation between quantitative measurements and qualitative observations.
