In my small 1st and 2nd-grade classroom, I strive to promote reading as a fun and enjoyable pastime. Too many times, students feel like the task is tedious. That is something they are forced to do. I want to change that mindset by offering a variety of books to engage my student's interests. Due to budget cuts, our school library has not added new books to the shelves for checkout in several years. Our librarian retired a few years back. With no one in the library keeping track of inventory, teachers rely more and more on classroom libraries to engage students' interest in reading. With new books coming out all the time, it becomes harder and harder to get students interested in reading with older, outdated readers. Recently my students have discovered it's more fun to read in a group. To do this, we need several sets of books for our classroom. I want to start book clubs where students can read a book in a group of 5 and discuss it together. This promotes good reading fluency and comprehension skills and allows them to get different perspectives and viewpoints on what they are reading as well. My goal is for each of my students to find a book they enjoy reading while also being able to read that book with their friends. Please help us achieve this goal!
