These resources will support ELA standards RL3.7-9. RL4.7-9, RL5.7-9. My students are captivated by books that they identify with. They demonstrate this with their astute comments when I read aloud a book in class, and I can see it in their eyes as they wait to see what comes next. All of these books have been chosen for a focus on socio-emotional learning. Our classroom library is very important to my students, and they frequently gravitate there to reach for a book. They love books, however, they also need hands-on activities where they can both learn and practice their social skills. Having these books in our class library will allow my students to continue to be excited by reading, and the hydroponics and science kits will encourage them to come together to learn by collaboration and teamwork. I have seen my students have their social skills supported by the right books, and the lessons contained in these books will be directly applicable to support their behavior during the face-to-face science activities my students all love. My students frequently ask to take a book home to read, which enriches the scope of their reading because these are not titles they have at home, nor are they likely to pick up these titles on their own in the school library. My students' ability to borrow hand picked titles from the class library will enable parents to read to their children at home, and further reinforce the skills that were neglected during the Covid-19 lockdown.
