Materials found in the practical life and science areas of the Montessori classroom allow children to explore the world around them and to develop a sense of community. Our classroom will be enhanced with supplies that help to fill in gaps in these areas. The practical life area is the cornerstone of the primary classroom environment and is filled with items recognizable in daily life such as pitchers, tools, and visual art mediums. Practical life materials are natural, child sized and allow children to repeat skills until mastered while indirectly developing their fine motor skills, independence, and creativity. These materials also allow children to care for themselves and their classroom environment which increases their self-confidence and sense of purpose; important components of social/emotional development. (SS.K.1 With prompting and support, generate compelling questions to explore how learning and working together builds a classroom community. VA:Cr1.K.1 Engage in exploration and imaginative play with materials. VA:Cr2.K.1 Through experimentation, build skills in various media and approaches to art-making.) The Montessori science curriculum allows children to learn about the world around them while simultaneously engaging their sense of wonder. Science can be found everywhere; from a nature walk, to measuring the rain, to learning about animal lifecycles. Conversations regarding these experiences lead to valuable teachable moments throughout the day. (K-ESS2-1. Use and share observations of local weather conditions to describe patterns over time. K-Ess3-1. Use a model to represent the relationship between the needs of different plants or animals (including humans) and the places they live.) This project will help to provide additional choices and experiences to students in our classroom. I look forward to watching the children further develop their sense of community and be inspired by the world around them.
