Our students would benefit from the MCT experience in the following ways: 1) Participation in MCT theater productions enhances a student’s socio-cultural and cognitive skills by providing opportunities to read and memorize songs, phrases, and characters’ lines. NVACS SL: presentation of knowledge and ideas. 2.)Participants show increases in confidence and positive social-emotional well-being. These are life skills that can be applied in any academic setting or career. Large numbers of Risley students (79%) come from another language background (Spanish, Marshallese, Tongan, Samoan, Tagalog, Guamanian). Best practices in English Language Development recommend providing students with creative and authentic activities, interacting with peers and adults in English. 3) The largely Hispanic parent population and other non-English speaking family members of students often feel intimidated to attend school events. However, MCT’s musicals featuring 60 local students have been proven to attract large numbers of parents/family members. They come to see their own students, friends of their students, and other Spanish-speaking families on zoom. 4) MCT is a free family-friendly event within walking distance of the students’ homes. The event takes place outside on a Saturday when most parents will be able to attend. Holding the musical outside will allow for a safer way to gather the community together. 5) The event is open to the community at-large and thus helps to build a sense of community around our neighborhood school. Having an outdoor event for families will ensure a safe and healthy in-person event for the community. 6) Our students and their families all experienced a great deal of loss during the COVID-19 pandemic. They lost jobs, were isolated with little access to technology, and were unable to spend time with extended family during the shutdown. A fun family event such as MCT would help to rebuild social networks to promote school attendance.
