Having the kids lead the discussion and "be the teacher" in my small groups provides students with an opportunity to be a leader, use mathematical vocabulary to reinforce and enhance their mathematical competency, and also simply makes the students feel important! I look forward to them using the easel whiteboard and dry erase markers to let their knowledge shine! The ultimate goal is to work on Standards for Mathematical Practice #3 (Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others) SMP #4 (model with mathematics.) The students also love hands on projects, which will require scissors and glue sticks for all students. Rewards and incentives are crucial for students this year, especially when so many are feeling defeated in their lack of skills. Let's be real. . .a prize, candy, sticker, or any reward for that matter can go a long way motivating a child. In the long run, students are increasing their practice time working toward a reward, which really helps them reach their full potential and meet their goals!
