As a teacher, it is my job to identify and help close any gaps in learning every year. Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 shutdowns, some important pieces of curriculum fell by the wayside, and as such we are seeing some serious gaps in student understanding when compared to where they should be at this time in grade 3. The biggest area of deficit I'm seeing is in writing.
My students' writing is a definite struggle. One of our standards is ELA W.3.4 With guidance and support from adults, produce writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task and purpose. Another standard is ELA W.3.5 With guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, and editing. This is very hard to do on a computer with this age group. The students need the paper in front of them, but because of ELA W.3.6 With guidance and support from adults, use technology to produce and publish writing (using keyboarding skills) as well as to interact and collaborate with others, we want to have them typing their writing on the computer. By printing their writing out, they will be able to manually revise and edit their writing and then publish and print for display their finalized copy.
By having access to a color printer in the classroom, my students will be able to print their writing for valuable revision and editing, presentation, collaboration, and publishing. It will help them complete other projects, such as our project-based-learning projects, and allow me to print the materials needed for them to have hands-on, engaging learning. A printer would be an invaluable addition to our classroom.
