Many students did not read for pleasure during the pandemic. Without access to school and community libraries, their reading scores suffered. When the school libraries opened back up for checkout, students cheered because they had not been in a library in almost two years. Many students, especially reluctant readers, are still hesitant to read highter level chapter and non-fiction books. Many opt for graphic novels, which draw them into the library. They need high interest books, fiction and non-fiction, with characters and people who look like them. The books will address the following content standards, helping to increase their reading levels: - RL.7.10 By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poems, in the grades 6-8 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range. - RI.7.10 By the end of the year, read and comprehend liberary nonfiction, in the grades 6-8 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range. A comfy couch will encourage students to stay in the library and read, even for just a few minutes so that they will see reading as a worthwhile pursuit.
