In my class, we explore a coming-of-age theme that spans across the first semester of my 9th grade English classes. Students choose from a variety of contemporary coming-of-age titles and read books in small groups. Through these small groups, students discuss what they are reading, explore various literary standards, and make personal connections. Through these personal connections, it is my hope that students can see themselves in some of the characters and make sense of their place in the world. In addition, I'd like them to experience characters from different perspectives and develop more empathy and understanding of others.
