Having access to more advanced ensemble band method books will allow my band musicians to continue to develop their musical performance skills. They will also be able to improve their music literacy and sight-reading skills with the addition of these method books to their library of available music. Band method books are great tools used to supplement regular performance literature. Musical concepts and music theory can be presented more in depth and with specific music examples written to demonstrate how musicians can implement them. Using band method books can help students to become self-corrective, understand the “how-to” questions and allow them to get to the dream of musical content much faster and more effectively. Using method books can save rehearsal time by reinforcing good musical concepts and focus at the beginning of each rehearsal. When my students are more fluent with how to perform in tune, with great tone and with technical facility, I can engage them in the deep and artistic concepts present in our concert literature. I could even rehearse ensemble skill exercises in between selections of literature for the day. The key is to isolate and work on specific ensemble skills, then apply them in the literature, making a direct connection with the skills they are developing. The end goal is to be able to explore emotion through music with my students eighty to ninety percent of the year, rather than hanging on for dear life getting them to perform close to the right notes at close to the right time at close to the right volumes. Doing this, we will have the opportunity to make magic happen.
