The use of pocket charts is a daily activity in my classroom, especially in phonics and spelling. Using the FUNdations curriculum, students come to the back of the rooms with whiteboards for guided practice and to record the strategies that are modeled for them. The pocket charts allow me to demonstrate word patterns and spelling rules as they build their own words using magnetic letters on their magnetic whiteboards. Pocket charts provide an easy place for my students to reference and share work. What becomes a problem is the fact that I do not have enough pocket charts, the handed-down pocket charts that I do have are falling apart, and the plastic windows on the charts have become stained, cracked, and yellowed from frequent use.
When I run out space or words and/or letters cannot be easily seen, students know that they must wait quietly for mw to get a piece of chart paper, some tape, or a few sentence strips to make it work. Even though they are great about doing this, it is distracting for my students, it does not allow for me to be the prepared teacher that I wish to be, and my student miss important instruction when time is wasted by compensating for lack of space to display words and letters. By having new pocket charts, I will be able to avoid all of these problems and focus on my students, the lessons, and their learning!
By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student focus and teacher preparation, you will help to increase students’ academic achievement. Students will be able to simply focus on the academic lesson, and not whether their teacher and her materials are going to work smoothly or not!
