Learning a string instrument can be challenging when students are unable to tune their own instrument. Orchestra teachers spend up to 10 minutes tuning all of the beginning string instruments at the beginning of each class. That is a lot of time taken away from student learning if only they were able to tune themselves. When students take their instruments home to practice and their strings become out of tune, they end up playing incorrect pitches and are unable to develop proper ear training. If beginning orchestra students had their own personal tuner, they would be able to tune their instrument at home so they can practice as well as tune themselves at the beginning of each class to maximize their learning time. Students would be able to tune themselves under 3 minutes and also be able to tune themselves at home if they were excluded for Covid exposure or absent from school. Students would be able to gain independence without relying on their teacher and also learn the responsibility of making sure their instrument is in tune before they practice at home and at school.
