The life of a middle school student is packed with all types of learning-academic, social, emotional, etc. For a student who also has Autism, managing sensory needs is another kind of learning that requires daily attention.
Being able to positively and adequately fulfill sensory needs, allows for students to THRIVE in school. Having access to resources that will help students monitor their sensory loads will increase productivity in the classroom. These materials will allow my students to access the Nevada standards for 6th and 7th grade in all academic areas (for example ELA 6.3.1 and Math 7.NS.1). Additionally, all of the materials are easily able to be cleaned and utilized during this time of COVID, and will continue to enhance the education of students in years to come.
Noise cancelling headphones allow students to engage with content while managing the effects of sound overload. A weighted blanket allows a student to receive needed deep pressure to relieve anxiety while participating in an activity. Headphones with a microphone, allow students to hear content from technology and engage, while being able to not be distracted by others around them. A rocking chair or wobble stools allow for a student to continue to interact with others while simultaneously fulfilling a sensory need to move, rock, and/or release energy. Adapted scissors allow a student to be successful and independent in fine motor activities involving cutting. Different small sensory toys allow students to be able to fidget with their hands, while learning in class. Color coded baskets allow for a plethora of sorting, organizational, and job-related activities to be successful while employing the visual sense of color. All of these items will immediately bless the students in my classroom!
