Becoming a fluent reader is the most important part of first grade learning. Reading from a computer screen is good, but nothing compares to holding a book in your hand and turning the pages as you successfully read each word. Access to grade level books is essential in becoming a fluent reader. These books will be used to create a classroom library that will provide on level books for all of my students to use to practice the many reading skills we work to master in first grade. The standards that will be practiced while reading our books include: RF.1.4- reading grade level text with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension, RI.1.10- read informational texts appropriately complex for grade 1, and RL.1.2 and 1.3 retelling stories, describing characters, and using key details after reading their books. A bookshelf full of interesting, on level books to choose from and practice with, will have a huge impact on the growth that each student will make this year. Being strong, fluent first grade readers will provide a foundation that will benefit them the rest of their lives.
