Literature is an amazing tool in speech therapy. Using books as a therapeutic foundation helps to make the goals my students are targeting functional and applicable right in the moment of teaching. Books are an important part of the Speech-Language Pathologist's (SLP) toolkit. They hold so much possibility and versatility in such a small package. I can do so much with books to help students increase their receptive/expressive/ pragmatic (e.g., categorizing, asking questions, grammar, describing, following directions, vocabulary, sequencing, describing feelings, role-playing) and articulation skills. Books take children to places all around the world and beyond. They help us share culture and diversity. I would like to incorporate a wide variety of books into my therapy sessions.
