The chosen resources will promote creativity and inclusivity through flexible seating options, novels that expand our student's view of the world around them, and organizational strategies to keep students focused on learning, creating, discussing, and discovering. Flexible seating and novels are rooted in the SEL core competencies of both promoting social awareness and building relationship skills. With this, students consistently use Common Core Standard ELA.5-6.SL.1 to promote collaborations and discussions with peers and others to promote higher thinking which has students think outside of their immediate life. These discussions are truly eye-opening and crucial to be exposed to, starting at the elementary level. This connects to SS.5.10 and SS.6-8.EWC.10 by discovering issues and challenges others face, and discovery, inquiry, and taking action on these points of view (ELA.5-6.RL.6), experiences, and culturally responsive and relevant connections. Flexible seating will allow for discussions to take place throughout the day and to promote collaboration in the classroom, encouraging students to discuss and debate their thoughts on a topic, explain their ideas, feelings, and emotions, and to fit the needs of each and every student. Portable student whiteboards will aide in this as well, providing a means for communication, collaboration, and continued learning with students and their partnerships. These connections and ability to discuss with peers is increasingly important after learning during a pandemic- our eyes have been opened to inequities in the world as well as students and ourselves feel a sense of disconnect from others. Diverse novel sections and informative books will provide tangible knowledge and description of experiences to the classroom. Students can make connections to these with themselves, their lives, and to the world, and expand their perspectives regarding the relationships they have with others.
