I'm requesting a broad variety of highly compelling texts (varied by level, source, and type; graphic novels and chapter books, fiction and nonfiction, all genres) that students can hold, turn physical pages, and read in class, at home, or even on our campus lawn. Reading is is one of the most effective ways to develop and improve not only literacy, but overall language skills, empathetic and emotional intelligence, and communicative skills. Reading is magic! My English language development students need to be able to communicate for social and instructional purposes within the school setting. (ELD 9-12.1) English language learners need to be able to communicate information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of language arts. (ELD 9-12.2) English language learners need to be able to communicate information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of mathematics. (ELD 9-12.3) English language learners need to be able to communicate information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of science. (ELD 9-12.4) English language learners need to be able to communicate information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of social studies. (ELD 9-12.5) We are in-person full-time this year (as opposed to hybrid last year), but students are struggling even more with the separation (distancing, no supply sharing, screen fatigue). The physical texts I'm requesting and the materials to enable physical engagement will directly enrich and enable students' language and intercultural learning.
