I teach English Language Arts for all 8th grade scholars in our building. They are in their critical last year of middle school, where we are working on the academic skills they will need to succeed in high school and beyond. Because of COVID-19, our scholars have had a combination of in-person learning, virtual learning, and hybrid learning for their entire middle school career. They have met these challenges with resilience and grace, and are working hard to make sure they have all the academic skills they will need for their first year of high school. To help reinforce grade-level content taught in class, as well as help students refresh skills from earlier grades, we use programs such as Lexia Core5 and Sora. These programs are accessed via students' Chromebooks, and help target skills scholars need practice with. Sora also allows them to access books online, including standard eBooks, audiobooks for read-aloud support, comics, graphic novels, and magazines. In order to make these programs accessible for all scholars, and increase time on task, I would like to make sure every scholar has a pair of headphones to use. Not only will this help scholars maintain focus on their academic Chromebook tasks, but it will also reduce potential distractions for scholars who are working on other tasks. This project will allow me to provide 15 over-the-ear headphone sets to my scholars who do not have their own.
