There are certain basics that are necessary to live: food, shelter, water (did somebody say coffee?). There are also basics that are necessary to learning in the classroom. Paper, pencils, etc. There are also the basics that help a teacher not become insane with disorganization (i.e. hanging file folders, dry erase board markers, coffee again anyone?). I am hoping to give my students and myself the basic tools of the classroom in order to be able to move on to other things. Have you ever tried to write without a pen or pencil? It's not that easy. While each of our students has a Chromebook to do work on, many of the students in my class still need the process of writing on a piece of paper to develop other skills. Toner cartridges are needed to print out IEPs which help support each student's individual needs. File folders are needed to keep each student's information organized so that I can access it easily when it is important. A presentation remote can help me be more engaging and present in the classroom, instead of being stuck behind my desk. With these tools, I won't have to worry about the basics, I can move on to the next level of teaching my students how to be successful.
