Flexible seating allows students the freedom to make the choices that work best for them of where they can sit in order to focus on the task at hand. During independent work times, they choose a location in the classroom that works for them, typically sitting under desks, in cubbies, laying on the floor with clipboards, but when they are uncomfortable they begin to get off task. I thought if I can get them a lap desk, they can sit anywhere they want, not worry about being uncomfortable any longer, and focus on getting the task at hand complete. I have also included a nice rug, so that can be more comfortable than the hard floor - which can be used during independent work, whole-class reading, and SEL circle time. Speaking of SEL, I have a portion of my classroom dedicated to SEL, so not only will the rug be a nice change for them, the books will be good reminders on rough days. One of the books even includes squishy emotion toys, so when a student needs a mental break, they have somewhere dedicated to going that is comfortable and can help change their mood around. Next, when the students are done with their work or while we are in math or ELA rotations, I believe that learning can be fun - and can take place even while playing games. Because of this, I have included several Math and ELA games for the students. I want them to be able to recognize that they can play, and learn at the same time, without having to use technology. If my project is funded, I can only imagine the excitement on my students' faces. They will recognize that this is a celebration for the classroom, bringing them joy daily.
