As a first-year ELA teacher, I have not had the time nor finances to gather the supplies needed in my classroom as my more senior colleagues have. One of the biggest items on my list is the heater/cooler. The school I teach at is over 70 years old and the cooling and heating system isn't the best. Living in Northern Nevada means we have both really hot days and freezing weather conditions. Comfort is important for a classroom to function. According to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, people need to have their physiological and safety needs met, i.e. warmth and comfort, before they can focus on meeting any other needs, i.e. education. The pencils, markers, highlighters, and other supplies are for students to use. In an ELA classroom, supplies like these are vital for assignments, projects, annotating texts, SEL activities, etc. In my class, our anchor standards are ELA RL.9-10.3, W.9-10.5, SL.9-10.4, W.11-12.4, W.11-12.5, RI.11-12.5, and RI.11-12.6 where having a comfortable classroom with proper supplies will help students master these standards. As a first-year teacher, I want to make sure my first year continues and ends with feeling like I was able to support my student in every way possible. I know that with these supplies I can, and will, get closer to this goal. Due to COVID, many of my students have lost parents or family members who were their main source of income. School supplies are not going to be the first thing on many of their minds when survival is. This makes it even more important for me as a teacher to make sure I have those supplies to support my students, especially those who have been gravely affected by COVID.
