A big focus in 8th grade English is being able to make a claim and support it, but writing an essay is not always the most engaging platform, so this year the students in my classroom will be putting together their own court where they will play all of the roles and come up with a verdict. The small notebooks and pencils will be where the students complete their research and take notes during the trials. The judge needs to be in character so that the student needs a gavel and robe! As a class, we will brainstorm the pros and cons of the arguments on the big paper using the markers. This project is hands-on for the students, and that is when they are most likely to participate.
