My students have spent the past year and a half learning at home in front of a computer. They are starved for hands-on experiences. Research has shown that more permanent learning occurs through hands-on experiences versus just learning through the virtual experience. I want to be able to provide this hands-on experience for my students who are learning from home. They should not miss out on science labs just because of a virus. These kits will be sent home so students will be able to explore the texture of the rocks using their hands and closing their eyes to engage their other senses. They will be able to smell the salt of the mineral halite. They will be able to feel the silkiness of talc and identify the difference between fracture and cleavage. They'll be able to understand the density of galena, and the magnetism of magnetite. These resources will then be returned back to school at the end of the school year so they can be utilized by future classes.
