It's no secret, reading can be boring for kids. Education is changing every single day, and so are the interest of my students. As an educator, it is important to me that what materials I use in my classroom accurately reflect those ever-evolving interests. Students in my classroom like to read about superheroes and villains, epic stories filled with whimsy and mystery. Books printed before they were born simply just don't cut it anymore. Graphic novels are a much more accessible and fun way to introduce kids to the wonderful world of reading, and act as a bridge for new or underdeveloped readers. Struggling readers will often pick up a comic book because the pictures and visuals are less intimidating than a typical book. Students who read these graphic novels find reading fun and begin to read more for enjoyment! Comic books are a gateway to better reading skills for reluctant readers, and can truly show students that literacy is more than just words printed on a page, but visual stories available anywhere about anything.
