NVACS - SL.K.1 states that kindergarten students should be able to participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about kindergarten appropriate topics. In order to do this, students should be able to follow agreed upon rules for interactions and continue conversations through multiple exchanges. Using the spaces and items requested in my project, students will be able to practice these skills. They will be able to sit around a common space while keeping their distance and collaborating safely with peers in center groups. Additionally, they will be able to engage in physical activities that promote several conversation and language skills including, but not limited to, turn taking, speaking, listening, compromising, and being a good sport. These activities will provide my students with developmentally crucial time to enhance their social, dramatic play skills which in turn, promotes authentic speaking and listening growth.
Many typical classroom activities that promote conversation, collaboration, speaking, listening and engagement have been stripped for the past two school years due to Covid safety procedures, and I am excited to bring them back to my room with your help.
The Collaborative Floor Workspace will give my students an extra space in my room to distance safely, but still be able to participate in shared activities with peers such as center work, writing, and conversation. Since student desks are still distanced from one another, this will provide a safe, common workspace to promote speaking and listening.
The Basketball Hoop, Comet Balls, and Swing and Catch Cups will allow my students to participate once again in much needed conversational, social and physical activities with peers, while maintaining safe distance for health and using their own assigned equipment.
